Personal Injury Attorney for Chatham County, NC
Chatham County is approximately 25 miles south of my Graham office via NC-87.
I've been handling personal injury cases in the Piedmont region for 28 years, and Chatham County has a set of procedural specifics that matter from the first day of a case.
Three things every Chatham County crash victim needs to know before anything else.
First: the Chatham County courthouse is physically located inside the traffic circle in downtown Pittsboro. If you've never been there, you'll circle it looking for parking. Plan for that.
Second: the Pittsboro Police Department has not released crash reports directly since February 1, 2015. If your crash happened on a Pittsboro city street, there is no online portal and no in-person pickup -- certified copies go through NC DMV form TR-67A only. Most attorneys don't know this.
Third: Chatham County's only hospital is a 25-bed Critical Access facility in Siler City. Serious trauma cases from crashes anywhere in Chatham County transfer out of county to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, Duke University Medical Center, or Cone Health in Burlington.
Chatham County is one of the fastest-growing counties in North Carolina. Chatham Park, a 8,500-acre master-planned development on US-15-501 north of Pittsboro, is adding thousands of residents and dramatically increasing traffic volume on the county's primary corridors. That growth means more crashes, more complex liability, and more insurance activity in a county that was not designed for current traffic loads.
QUICK ANSWER: CHATHAM COUNTY PERSONAL INJURY
All personal injury cases in Chatham County file at the Chatham County Courthouse, 40 E. Chatham Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312 -- located inside the traffic circle in downtown Pittsboro. North Carolina law gives you three years to file under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1-52(5). Wrongful death carries a two-year deadline under § 1-53(4). Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. eCourts went live April 29, 2024.
One Courthouse for All of Chatham County -- Inside the Traffic Circle
SHORT ANSWER: Every civil personal injury case in Chatham County files at the Chatham County Courthouse, 40 E. Chatham Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312, (919) 545-3500. Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Superior Court District 15B (shared with Orange County). eCourts launched April 29, 2024. The courthouse sits inside the traffic circle (rotary) in downtown Pittsboro. Free parking is available on the circle's perimeter. Plan extra time your first visit.
Chatham County has roughly 83,874 residents as of 2024 and is one of North Carolina's fastest-growing counties, driven primarily by the Chatham Park development north of Pittsboro on US-15-501. Pittsboro is the county seat and courthouse location. Siler City is the second largest city, approximately 16 miles west on US-64.
The courthouse location inside the traffic circle is not a minor detail. The approach roads merge into a rotary, parking is limited around the perimeter, and first-time visitors routinely circle twice before finding a spot. If you have a filing deadline, build extra time into your schedule. My office has been making this drive for 28 years.
Chatham County is in Superior Court District 15B, shared with Orange County. The same senior resident superior court judge covers both counties. District Court is District 18 (same as Orange County after HB 259 restructured the districts effective January 1, 2024).
Chatham County's Primary Crash Corridors
SHORT ANSWER: US-15-501 between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill is the highest-volume crash corridor in Chatham County. The Chatham Park development on US-15-501 north of Pittsboro is adding construction traffic, new residents, and permanent traffic volume to a road that already carried Research Triangle commuter load. US-64 between Pittsboro and Siler City is a two-lane rural highway with documented fatalities. US-64 east of Pittsboro runs toward Durham. NC-87 connects Pittsboro south to Siler City and north to Graham through rural, two-lane terrain.
Chatham County's crash profile has been changing rapidly. Until the last decade, it was a rural county with modest traffic volume. Chatham Park -- a master-planned development approved for up to approximately 22,000 residential units on 8,500 acres on US-15-501 north of Pittsboro -- has been under phased construction since 2016 and is driving significant increases in traffic on US-15-501 between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill. This is the same road where construction staging vehicles, delivery trucks, commuter traffic, and new-resident drivers are all sharing a two-lane stretch that was not engineered for current volume.
US-64 west of Pittsboro toward Siler City is a documented fatality corridor. Two-lane, higher speed limit, rural character, and limited sight lines at several intersections. Siler City is approximately 53% Hispanic per census data, with a significant population that may have language barriers when dealing with insurance companies, police report systems, and courts. This is relevant context for case strategy in Siler City-area crashes.
North Carolina Personal Injury Law in Chatham County
SHORT ANSWER: Three years to file under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1-52(5). Two years for wrongful death from the date of death under § 1-53(4). Pure contributory negligence -- 1% fault may bar all recovery. As of July 1, 2025, NC minimum auto insurance is 50/100/50 and UIM stacks under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-279.21. Chatham County has the highest median household income of any county Julian serves, which means well-capitalized insurance carriers and more contested claims.
Statute of Limitations
Three years from the accident date under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1-52(5). Wrongful death is two years from the date of death under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1-53(4) and § 28A-18-2. The discovery rule under § 1-52(16) can delay the clock for injuries not immediately apparent, with a 10-year hard cap.
Pure Contributory Negligence
North Carolina is one of roughly four states still using pure contributory negligence. If a jury finds you were even 1% responsible for your crash, you may recover nothing. Chatham County has higher-income residents and well-resourced insurance companies -- adjusters here are experienced at raising contributory negligence arguments even in clear-liability cases. Don't give recorded statements without an attorney.
July 2025 Insurance Law Change
Effective July 1, 2025, North Carolina raised its minimum auto liability coverage from 30/60/25 to 50/100/50 under Senate Bill 452 (Session Law 2023-133), codified at N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-279.21. UIM coverage now stacks on top of the at-fault driver's liability policy. Applies to policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.
Chatham County City Pages
SHORT ANSWER: All Chatham County personal injury cases file at the Chatham County Courthouse, 40 E. Chatham Street, Pittsboro, inside the traffic circle. The city where your crash happened determines which police department investigated and which crash report system applies. CRITICAL: Pittsboro PD has not released crash reports directly since February 1, 2015. All Pittsboro crash reports require NC DMV form TR-67A through ncdot.gov/dmv -- there is no online portal and no in-person pickup at the department.
Each city page below covers the specific crash corridors, police report procedures, hospital distances, and documented local incidents for that community.
The Pittsboro police report restriction is the most operationally unusual crash report rule in any county I cover. Since February 1, 2015, Pittsboro PD has not released reports directly. Every Pittsboro city street crash report must be obtained through NC DMV using form TR-67A. This creates delays in cases and catches many claimants -- and their attorneys -- off guard. I've known about this restriction for years and build it into case timelines from day one.

Medical Care After a Chatham County Crash
SHORT ANSWER: UNC Health Chatham (formerly Chatham Hospital) at 475 Progress Blvd in Siler City is the only hospital in Chatham County. It is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital -- it stabilizes patients and handles non-critical care, but serious crash injuries transfer out of county. Crash victims from Pittsboro and the northern county are typically transported to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill (~20 miles northeast on US-15-501) or to Cone Health ARMC in Burlington. Serious trauma from Siler City may go to UNC Medical Center Chapel Hill (~35 miles) or Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
The hospital geography in Chatham County divides roughly along US-15-501. Crash victims in northern Chatham County -- Pittsboro, Chatham Park, and the US-15-501 corridor toward Chapel Hill -- are typically transported to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, which is a Level I Trauma Center approximately 20 miles northeast. Crash victims in Siler City and western Chatham County are closer to UNC Health Chatham but will transfer to Chapel Hill or Greensboro for serious trauma.
UNC Health Chatham is part of the UNC Health system. As a Critical Access Hospital, it is equipped for stabilization, observation, and lower-acuity care. It is not a designated trauma center. For any multi-system trauma, spinal injury, or serious head injury from a Chatham County crash, the patient is going to Chapel Hill or Greensboro. That transfer affects both treatment timelines and the medical bill structure of a personal injury case.

Why Chatham County Clients Work With Julian Doby
Chatham County is 25 miles from my Graham office. I've been handling cases in the courts of this region for 28 years. The Pittsboro courthouse is in Superior Court District 15B -- the same district as Orange County -- and I know the procedures there as well as I know my home court in Graham.
Chatham County is growing faster than its legal infrastructure has scaled. New residents from the Research Triangle bring high insurance coverage and contested claims. Chatham Park's phased development keeps producing construction-related crashes on US-15-501. And the Pittsboro police report restriction -- in effect since 2015 -- is a procedural trap that costs unrepresented claimants time they don't have.
I practice in four counties -- Alamance, Orange, Chatham, and Caswell. NC-87 is my corridor in both directions. My NC State Bar profile (#25407) has been active since 1998.

Under North Carolina's pure contributory negligence rule, if you are found even 1% at fault, you may recover nothing. Chatham County has well-resourced insurance carriers who raise this defense early. Don't give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer without an attorney.

Two years from the date of death under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 1-53(4). That is the death date, not the accident date. Only the personal representative of the deceased's estate can file. In Chatham County cases, serious crashes often result in transfers to out-of-county hospitals, and the transfer timeline is relevant to the damages picture.

I don't waste your time or mine. If you have a case, I'll tell you. If you don't, I'll tell you that too.
Chatham County's procedural specifics -- the courthouse in the traffic circle, the Pittsboro police report restriction, the limited trauma hospital, the impact of Chatham Park on US-15-501 crash patterns -- are things I know because I've been doing this here for 28 years.
